Arroyo Seco

We took advantage of a long weekend (3-days due to Labor Day) and camped in Arroyo Seco. Nice group of friends now known as "The Camping Family".

Nice hikes, swimming in cold water in the middle of intense heat was big part of our weekend. Of course, usually hot and clear skies leave almost no chance of photography for sunset or during the day.

But, as if part of a magic trick sunrise transformed scenes into real gems. Foggy mornings, and an "okay" (during the day) lake with mist raising from the water as if it was being boiled at sunrise, made me a happy photographer!

Mono Lake - August 2011

After some time of going out to photograph, you start to get really good at guessing/estimating how a sunset or sunrise will turn out. This comes from practice, and it becomes 2nd nature after awhile.
Of course, due to my day work (computer consultant) I have not been able to go out and shoot lately and my estimations are really bad lately.

This weekend, I happened to be on my way back from Las Vegas to the San Francisco bay area. I decided to make a quick stop in Mono Lake, I arrived maybe 1 hour before sunset. The parking lot was packed of cars of what I assumed were photographers', and I was not even thinking about photographing. But I went anyway, of course I was not even aware it was going to be full moon, and photographers were lining up to photograph it.

I happened to see Michael Frye leading a workshop, and I wanted to say a quick "Hello" as he's been an inspiration for me (most probably without him knowing it.) I said hi, and in the middle of our quick conversation (which I probably was not saying anything coherent) I happened to say "Too bad the sunset seems that is not going to be a very good one", the professional he is, he said "Don't discard this one yet, and the full moon is rising as well"...
I had already scouted the place I wanted to shoot... well 20 minutes later, we had the sunset you see in these images. I felt embarrassed, and smiled a bit just remembering what I said.

Alamere Falls Hike - July 2011

After so long without doing a good workout, We managed to escape for a day trip to Alamere Falls with a couple of friends. I am definitely out of shape, and I was happy to finish the 8.4 miles hike, and also really proud that Vanessa (my 11 years old daughter) enjoyed and finished the hike too.

We stopped for a quick picnic at Bass Lake, and then proceeded to the final goal of reaching Alamere Falls.

Usually, this waterfall is at its best during spring or winter after heavy rain. Regardless, It was still running and provided a nice setting for the location. We will be back for early fall hike later.

This is my second trip to Canaima National Park, and I cannot stop feeling in awe when enjoying such natural beauty. This time, unlike my first trip, I was able to reach the Angel Falls. I hope this set of images gather a little bit of my experience of being there. Things I didn't include are: stories told by our pemon guides, mosquito bites, and getting wet under some of the water falls.

Spring in Nevada & Arizona

A long weekend of driving, sun, hikes, and photography.

After visiting a customer in Las Vegas, I decided to stay a couple of extra days to drive around and visit different locations. I am still on the search for inspiration, and to reactivate my photography again.

Nice meeting people on the way, and around. I am back to my "office", tired but feeling at ease that I am working towards being again a consistent photographer.

Like a friend of mine mentioned, photography is a life long marathon. No rush to reach the end, in fact pace yourself and keep practicing!

After about 4 months without photographing, I finally took a couple of days to go for a lone trip to visit Yosemite as a way to start photographing again.

I was not exactly as inspired yet, but it was nice to be surrounded by such natural beauty. I also had the chance to meet some friends which we have been following each other online through photography forums, they are nick named "The Three Amigos". It was really nice meeting Ray, Leo and Chris. It is always great to find people who genuinely enjoy nature, photography and friendship.

Hopefully, I will start finding time to photograph again, and getting back to what I enjoy!

From Key West in Florida to Fremont in California!

I spent 4 days in Key West this week for company meetings, and some fun. In general, it was cold and a bit foggy at times... Given the schedule of meetings, it was hard to go out and photograph, but at least I went out a couple of mornings to the beach of the place I was staying at.

Back in Fremont, I was rewarded with the first really foggy morning of the year on Sunday. I wanted to photograph the lone tree I had photographed before because I noticed some time ago a branch was broken, and I don't know how long it will hold altogether. I had a series of photos of this tree, and it is really sad to see it already at this stage. It will be missed.

This set include my last images from 2010, and the first ones from 2011. I spent a long weekend with my wife and daughter, along with a group of really good friends.

Even though it started in a house with no electric power for the night after a snow storm, it was a great weekend. Inside the house, warm with great people, and typical venezuelan food. While outside, snowing and crazy cold at times.

One particular day it was frigid at 3 degrees Fahrenheit (-16 Celsius), the next day all day snowing. The "Snow Penciled" image was taken while snowing, and seeing it in detail you can even notice the streaks of snow in it, creating the feeling of pencil strokes in the image.

What an excellent way to start the new year!

The best to all of you in 2011

I spent the whole week working at a customer in Vancouver, Canada and did not have time to go out and photograph. Well, I managed to at least shoot one with the iPhone on my way to the office, and two more images through the window of the plane. I actually like them all, it just shows that sometimes you just need to be open to what is around you.

This week, I tried to keep up producing images... From a starry night (right after rain in the area, usually the sky is pretty clean) in Fremont, California to Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada where I'll be working for the rest of the week. Not sure if I will have time for more photographs this week, but at least I got some today Sunday before getting busy during the week.

Have a great week!

Weekend November 5-8

This weekend brought rain to the SF bay area, and with it we got the chance of beautiful light between storms. I missed photographing one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen, but still I enjoyed capturing some of the weather transitions.

Also, after long time trying to photograph the sea palms at Bean Hollow Beach... the conditions were finally there. Low tide to be able to reach the location, and side lighting during sunset... it almost feel like a pre-historical image.

When trying to come up with a title, I had "Sea Palms at Sunset" but my daughter once she saw it she just said it looks like "Dr Seuss' Truffula Trees"... the reason for the alternative title.

Coyote Hills - Nov 4th

In preparation for my trip to Venezuela, I decided to buy a new lens as I was feeling too sick of DX lenses with the full frame Nikon D700. So, I got the lens (Nikkor 16-35mm) today and I went for a "quick" hike around Coyote Hills.

Quality of the images seem really nice with the lens, but I just realized my camera sensor needs a good cleaning.

Well, at least I spent 2 hours walking 4.5 miles while photographing!

Most of us non-professional photographers live in urban areas, and work in other fields which take most of our time out of photography itself.

In my case, I usually photograph nature, and I am always looking for locations where I can photograph, and still feel like I did a trip somewhere far and remote.

In this case, I have passed in front of this area so many times, and always being attracted to it because of the way it looks under certain lighting which seems remote if we abstract out all the different things around. This saturday, I knew it was cloudy and almost rainy (again), but I decided to wake up early again... and photograph a little bit these salt formations which, using your imagination, could be located anywhere.

Here is my little Greenland, even mars if you want!

Coyote Hills - Hike Oct 24th

After long time without going on my own for a hike to photograph, I decided this weekend I will break the dry spell.

Saturday, I woke up at 5:45am just to verify if I could go out, but as soon as I did I realize it was raining heavily. I decided to stay and keep sleeping.

Sunday, same routine but this time it was not raining even though it looked like it was going to start at any time. I checked the weather radar around my area, and there was a chance of maybe the sun filtering through the clouds to illuminate the scene I had checked out some days ago while biking with a friend.

Even though there was not a dramatic colorful sunrise, during this kind of weather is when there could be the best chances for it. I was glad I got out, and at least started to exercise both physically and photographically.

Any inputs/comments always welcome!

Go quietly, alone; no harm will befall you. – John Muir

Water in all its different expressions provide us with the meaning of life, and beyond that, the feeling of being connected to nature as life goes on. Either at a river, lake or the ocean, water has always given me a sense of peacefulness and calm difficult to find elsewhere.

With this set of photographs, including images from Canada, USA and my native Venezuela, I want to place you in several locations where my previous statement has proven to be true. I invite you to feel at ease when looking at them, and hopefully you will enjoy part of my experience while photographing them, mixed together with your own feelings and memories.
